Current and Future Expectations From Enterprise Architecture Practice

Dr. Anil Paingankar  Lead Architect, Media & Telecommunication, Wipro Technologies Limited

At present, business funds technology to support it. At the same time technical innovation is changing at a very high velocity that has direct business impact of a very high magnitude. It is therefore evident that technology will be driving the business strategy and vision today and days to come. This will require business to be ready for change to meet the market demands and to fulfil more demanding, informed and valuable customers. This requires Organizations to have a group and/or practice that is highly matured, that senses technology and strategic changes business requires and accordingly makes the enterprise ready to technology advances. This group or practice is the one that supports Organization's Enterprise Architecture (EA). This will require any Organization's EA practice to be very strong and matured that will include additional roles and skills to form the board as well as Chief Architect Office.

Expectation of any competitive Organization from EA practice will be as follows,
1.    Analysis trends in technology, business operations, business model, partnering strategy and in distributed value chain.
2.    Trends in upcoming technology and Customer segmentation any collaboration and partnership requirement.
3.    Expected future Operations and Business Support Systems and Software
4.    Predict impact of currently supported IT systems and software for upcoming trends and market
5.    Predict impact of currently supported IT systems and software for upcoming technology concepts
6.    Design flexible Business, IS and Operational Architecture artefacts that forms EA perspective for architecture, governance and transition that will easily support technology demands to support business.
7.    Highly matured EA communication methodology to support the Organization across different skills and business groups.
8.    Work with strategic team and organizations e.g. Gartner, Forrester to identify future trends and market demands and assess existing EA work products across all the perspectives for readiness to change.

Wipro Limited, Bangalore, India successfully completed EA assessment and designed future state architecture for a Middle East client who were strategizing for a large business transformation to meet the regional regulations. The assessment and the future state design involved working with technology and industry standards, providing exiting IS architecture modelled using Architecture tools, build future state architecture using this tool, roadmap, milestones, migration strategy as well as recommendations for relevant software and system integrator services.

Key takeaways:

1. Share Working experience in Enterprise Architecture - what went well and want went wrong.
2. Future state and expectation from EA practice. Current approach what will fall short with respect to the expectations that go beyond the current known practice.
3. Key Points on maturing existing EA practice to conform to new trends and expectation.
