Vijaya Kumar Khaderbad, Head – Professional Services Group, Components Engineering Group, Tata Consultancy Services; and Satyajit U. Salian, Head, Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vahini Programme

The Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vahini (SSSVV) Programme was launched by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba on His 85th Birthday, 23rd November 2010. The Vision Statement of SSSVV is: “To be a seamless, synergistic, safe medium for nurturing and sharing knowledge by harnessing the power of collaborative ideas, people and technology for the welfare of humanity.”  The program aims to make education Insightful, Inspiring, Enjoyable and Participative by catering to the four domains of a holistic teaching-learning experience in a school; Classroom, Corridor, Campus and Community. SSSVV believes that ‘Education for all’ would become a reality only if there is a strong emphasis on volunteerism, and hence the credo “Education, for All; By All”. SSSVV works with schools by facilitating integrated learning and character building. Its three deliverable are Lesson Plans for the State Board curriculum integrated with Human Values, teaching aids and continual mentoring of teachers.

To deliver this program, SSSVV has empowered teachers and other volunteers with collaborative technology and process for creating content and through use of adaptive technology has facilitated sharing of the content. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) had conceptualized and developed the collaborative content management solution. The solution, first of its kind in India, was built using the Enterprise Architecture concepts and TOGAF ADM. The system is available on a private cloud environment offered by Sai Systems.

The web based application includes the functionality such as asset management, content generation, lesson plan management, customizing the
lesson plan, discussion forums.

Currently SSSVV is being used by 54 schools. The portal currently has about 3,400 teachers and volunteers who are involved with SSSVV in developing, reviewing the content and making it available to the schools. As most of the users are volunteers and spread out across the country and few from abroad too, the portal and other free technology tools like Google calendar, Facebook, Skype and Whatsapp is used to Coordinate and  Communicate with them effectively.

Thus, enterprise architecture driven system development is helping SSSVV to realise their vision and goals.

Key takeaways:

  • Building Human Values in education through technology
  • Volunteering in Education
