SAN FRANCISCO, June 11, 2009 – The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium focused on open standards and global interoperability within and between enterprises, today announced the plenary agenda and preliminary speaker lineup for the 3rd Security Practitioners Conference (SPC), which will take place in Toronto on July 22 - 23, 2009 at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre. As a co-located event with the 23rd Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference, the SPC will feature thought-provoking executive speakers and analysts who will discuss the evolving IT security landscape relative to new security standards and compliance mandates and the growing adoption of virtualization and cloud computing technologies.
Considering the numerous changes to IT security standards and compliance mandates that have been proposed this year, The Open Group SPC provides an ideal venue for high-level practitioners to share experiences and create best practices to shape the future of information security. The Wednesday morning plenary sessions will feature a keynote by Murray Rosenthal, senior policy analyst, Information Security and Technology Strategic Planning and Architecture Division, City of Toronto, on “The Disciplines of Information Security and Security Architecture: Two Complementary Ambits.” The program will also explore the realm of virtualization and security with a presentation by Manu Namboodiri, vice president marketing, BitArmor. The morning session will round out with two presentations focused on corporate security architecture given by Alex Woda, practice director, Avient Solutions Group, and Steve Whitlock, chief security strategist, Boeing.
“IT security has recently been thrust into the limelight with United States President Obama’s recent spotlight on cybersecurity and the many new standards and compliance mandates that are affecting the majority of our member organizations around the world,” said Jim Hietala, vice president of Security, The Open Group. “We aim to have the Toronto SPC serve as the unifying forum to educate and guide organizations as they comply with the various mandates and begin to evolve their IT security infrastructures to safely utilize virtualization and cloud computing technologies.”
The afternoon of the first conference day will focus on security and identity issues in cloud computing and will include a formal debate between cloud vendors and SMB enterprises discussing whether or not the cloud is more secure than the enterprise. The debate will be moderated and recorded as a live podcast by ZDNet blogger and principal of Interarbor Solutions, Dana Gardner.
GRC trends will be the theme of the closing conference day with morning presentations centered on the evolving regulations of cyberspace, risk management and the different methodologies available for IT governance. Peter T. Davis, principal, Peter Davis and Associates, will provide an overview of the various governance frameworks in his session titled “Beyond COBIT: Implementing COBIT, ITIL, ISO 27000 and Six Sigma.” The afternoon presentations will provide deeper insight into governance, risk, compliance, and audit issues and highlight new emerging standards in these areas.
