SAN FRANCISCO, November 12, 2008 – The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium focused on open standards and global interoperability within and between enterprises, today announced a public demonstration of Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS), an emerging high-assurance and high-robustness security architecture, at MILCOM 2008 on November 17-19 in San Diego. The demonstration is a collaborative effort by Department of Defense (DoD) systems integrators Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Rockwell Collins. All of these companies and their key MILS component suppliers are affiliated with The Open Group’s Real-Time and Embedded Systems Forum.
This demonstration is the culmination of several years of standards development and investment in the MILS architecture by The Open Group and all demonstration companies. The multi-vendor demonstrations will feature the MILS approach to information assurance (IA), which can use Common Criteria-evaluated off-the-shelf products as a base to achieve secure information sharing in the battlespace. The MILS architecture partitions application programs, data, and communications in distributed systems and enables development of systems where multiple levels of security domains exist on a single processor, making it possible to replace several traditional, federated computers. By using the MILS architecture, high assurance systems development, certification, accreditation, purchase, deployment, and operation is more efficient, more affordable, and lower risk.
The demonstration will show how MILS can be implemented to protect highly sensitive military and intelligence communications networks, and deliver trusted data to the warfighters, homeland security, and first responders at a level not yet attainable with currently deployed technologies. Four separate demonstration scenarios will be shown: a Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD)/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses (DEAD) mission; an Offensive Counter-Air mission; a Time-Sensitive Targeting (TST) mission; and a Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) mission. These demonstrations will show the Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon systems, featured in the Wind River booth (#1231), interacting with the Rockwell Collins Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC) environment demonstrated in the Rockwell Collins booth (#1323) across the main aisle at MILCOM 2008 (http://www.milcom.org/).
