About
the IT Architect Certification Program
With the industry demand for highly qualified and experienced
Enterprise IT Architects exploding, there is a growing
need to establish a common industry-wide baseline for skills
and experience. Although there are number of companies
that currently qualify their staff as Enterprise Architects
or IT Architects, a
common, industry-wide assessment with an independent assurance
of competence has been missing. This gap is now bridged
with the IT Architect Certification program provided by
The Open Group.
About
Accreditation
Employers of Enterprise Architects and IT Architects, including
business organizations, IT Architect service providers, and
customer organizations, can achieve accreditation of their
internal programs for certifying their Architects based
on skills and experience.
Accreditation provides a review of the equivalence of the
curricula and/or programs, and provides confidence that the
accredited programs produce Certified IT Architects who meet
the conformance standards. The accreditation process provides
assurance that the accredited company’s or organization’s
program conforms to the criteria established for the Direct
program. It can be attained by an organization whose internal
certification or staff development programs have been
assessed as meeting the accreditation requirements of The
Open Group’s certification program.
Why
The Open Group
The Open Group, a technology- and vendor-neutral consortium,
that developed the program in response to the industry
demand, is ideally qualified to take on the task of setting
an industry-wide standard for IT Architects, thereby advancing
IT Architecture as a profession. It has an a successful
track record in certification services and standards and
best practices development, as well as a long history of

its Architecture Forum.
Eligibility
Criteria
All third-party IT architect certification
and professional development programs are eligible for accreditation,
including programs operated by major consulting firms. Those
meeting the requirements will be accredited. Upon accreditation,
the programs will be able to certify their eligible employees.
Employers of IT Architects wishing to certify their IT Architects
but not having an internal program can still provide certification
to their employees by encouraging them to apply directly
with The Open Group.

applying measures of best practice skills and experience in assessing
staff – a
global yardstick which customers can trust.

benchmark for selecting qualified individuals, thereby
demonstrating to customers and partners that they
employ qualified individuals to lead their critical programs.
They will be able to verify their status in The
Open Group’s Directory

How
to Become Accredited
The accreditation process is
straightforward. Any organization with IT architect certification
or professional development program for certifying their
own staff or contractors is eligible for accreditation
and may submit an application, as defined in the Accreditation
Policy. If the Accreditation
Requirements are met, the

of IT architects certified,
and manage its employee records within the Directory
of Certified IT Architects.
Extended
Certification Requirements
The accreditation process was established to ensure uniformity
for the process and requirements for managing an IT Architect
certification program. The accreditation framework is intended
to be flexible and provides for additional industry, cultural
and organizational extensions to the base certification
requirements.
Beyond the Conformance
Requirements for a Certified IT Architect,
third parties operating an Accredited Certification Program
may levy additional requirements on their candidates in order
to satisfy their internal skills requirements. Such additional
requirements are called extended certification requirements.
For example, extended certification requirements might include
experience with a proprietary corporate method or appropriate
industry or cultural requirements.
Directory
of Certified IT Architects
The
Directory of Certified IT Architects is maintained by
the Certification Authority and lists IT Architects that
have been certified. The list is publicly available online.
